Below we discuss the two most commonly used types of sandpaper and the advantages of each type,
1. Conventional Sheet Sandpaper
Conventional sheet sandpaper is one of the most common and versatile choices in the world of abrasives. It typically consists of a base material, such as Kraft paper or latex paper, treated with adhesive, which serves as the bonding agent for the abrasive particles. These abrasive particles can be either synthetic or natural materials like silicon carbide, brown aluminum oxide, or white aluminum oxide.
The production of conventional sheet sandpaper starts with the application of an electrostatic technique, where abrasive grains are evenly distributed and adhered to the paper's surface. Afterward, a synthetic resin adhesive is applied, followed by high-temperature curing to ensure secure adhesion of the abrasive particles. The most common international standard size for sheet sandpaper is 230 x 280mm, which can also be referred to as "9 x 11" sheets.

- Dry sandpaper
- Wet and dry sandpaper (suitable for both wet and dry applications)

2. Sponge Sandpaper (Foam Sandpaper)
Sponge sandpaper, often referred to as foam sandpaper, sponge-backed sandpaper, or sanding sponges. It is distinguished by its unique composition, featuring a special foam backing material and abrasive particles, which can include diamond, high-temperature silicon carbide, and white aluminum oxide.
What sets sponge sandpaper apart is its exceptional cutting power, durability, and unique cushioning effect provided by the soft foam backing. This cushioning effect effectively minimizes the risk of abrasive particles causing scratches on the workpiece's surface.
Furthermore, the electrostatic sanding process ensures that each abrasive particle is uniformly distributed across the soft foam backing, eliminating the presence of coarse grains. This results in an effective means of removing scratches and achieving a mirror-like finish on various materials.
